Fifth generation • Zero debt • Built to last
The door nobody told you about is wide open.
America is entering the largest building boom in three generations — and there are not enough skilled hands to build it. A fifth-generation contractor lays out the playbook: the real math, the right trade, and the road from apprentice to owner.
Skip the debt. Pick up the tools. Build a life worth a damn.
The Book
What's inside
Twenty chapters, one argument: the trades are the most honest wealth-building path left in America — and the AI era just made them more valuable, not less. This book isn't anti-college. It's anti-default.
THE REAL MATH
The trade path vs. the college path, dollar for dollar — net worth at 22, at 30, and at retirement. Bring a calculator.
PICK YOUR WEAPON
How to choose the right trade for who you are, land a registered apprenticeship, and get paid to learn from day one.
THE AI QUESTION, ANSWERED
Why robots conquered the factory sixty years ago but still can't touch the job site — including a head-on answer to the Optimus crowd.
THE BUILDER'S LADDER
The full career arc with real numbers: apprentice, journeyman, foreman, superintendent, project manager, owner.
MONEY THAT STAYS
The first real paycheck, the truck trap, the Roth IRA, and how compounding turns wages into generational wealth.
FOR THE WHOLE TABLE
An open letter to parents and educators, a path for career-changers and veterans, and a discussion guide for classrooms.
"When a man's predictions and his payroll disagree, trust the payroll."

THE AUTHOR
Steven R. Philipp Jr.
Steve Philipp is the president of Coatings Unlimited, Inc., a fifth-generation family contracting company founded in 1954, whose industrial coatings, linings, and fireproofing work protects airports, defense facilities, and critical infrastructure across America. His family has worked the trades since 1870. He has spent thirty-six years on job sites and in the rooms where contractors are made — and he wrote BUILT for every kid who's being told there's only one respectable path. There isn't.
The first line of defense for American infrastructure is the people who build and protect it. This book is for the next generation of them.
